Abstract
From January 1981 to December 1990, 89 patients who underwent chorionic villus sampling(CVS) and 56 who underwent amniocentesis and whose results were normal were studied in order to evaluate the attitude and receptivity of obstetric patients
toward
such cytogenetic study methods at the department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Yonsei University, College of Medicine, Seoul, Korea.
@ES The following results were obtained.
@EN The success rate of amniocentesis was 98.6% and the abortion rate was 1.36%. For CVS the rates were 94.1% and 3.33% respectively. There were no significant differences in age, religion, education level and obstetrical history between the two
groups.
Fifty five percent of gravidas who received VCS had prior knowledge regarding amniocentesis and 37% of gravidas who received amniocentesis already knew about CVS. Of the above, the gravidas who were oriented with the risks and benefits of CVS and
amniocentesis were 11.0% and 7.0% respectively. These were 6.0% and 2.6% of the each study group. Most of the gravidas were moderately anxious about fetal genetic defects but they were equally anxious about CVS and amniocentesis. In the case of
CVS, the
anxiety level of the gravidas decreased significantly at IUP 13 weeks when the test results were known. On the other hand, for amniocentesis the anxiety level was high when amniocentesis was performed at IUP 18 weeks but decreased as the test
results
were known at IUP 22 weeks. All of respondents indicated that they would definitely seek prenatal diagnosis in a future pregnancy. The gravidas received CVS and amniocentesis had a preference for CVS, 77% and 57% respectively. The majority of
respondents indicated that the time at which chorionic villus sampling is performed(73%), and the type of abortion procedure available(67%) would make them this method. In contrast, the factors that influenced women to choose amniocentesis
included
the
known low risk of spontaneous abortion(57%).
As yet, there has been no in-depth study of gravidas receiving antenatal care of their prior knowledge, degree of satisfaction, psychological response toward cytogenetic study methods. Therefore, it is expected that this study will assist in
providing
guidelines during genetic counselling and in carrying out cytogenetic studies.
